The Vienna State Opera is delighted to stage La Cenerentola, Gioachino Rossini's superb retelling of Charles Perrault's classic fairytale, Cinderella.

Cinderella, back in her old clothes and by the fireplace once more, is singing her sad song and toying with her one remaining bracelet; Don Magnifico and the stepsisters come back home, furious at the way things have turned out and suspicious of the strange resemblance between the mysterious lady and Cinderella.

The Prince (Francisco Araiza, at first portrays the valet, acts superbly and sings with his tuneful Rossinian tempos; very enjoyable. Fast-rising operatic royalty Serena Malfi and Levy Sekgapane star as our fairytale lovers, alongside a bit of luxury casting with Ildebrando D'Arcangelo as Cinderella's mysterious benefactor. Rossini master Alessandro Corbelli returns as the stepfather who tries to foil the happy ending.

This is a classic Rossini Rom/Com staged to the usual high standards of the Met. A first-rate cast delivers the goods vocally and visually. If there is any problem, it is with the opera itself, which after more than two hours of musical pyrotechnics has a rather long and flat denouement with the prince noticeably having little left to do except gaze at his bride.
